What is the meaning of 1 John 5:14-15? The verses state, “14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”
Yesterday I was reflecting a lot on what makes God grant the desires of His people. I was thinking of every possible action displayed and instruction obeyed relating to people getting their desires. In all of the reflection and verse browsing I did, I pondered on 1 John 5:14-15. It expresses that if one asks anything according to His will, God hears them. And knowing that He hears them in what one asks, they know they have the requests asked from Him.
Sounds like a pretty done deal to me. So then I reflected what it means to pray anything according to God’s will. People are sometimes unsure what the term “God’s will” or “will of God” means. But I think it’s pretty simple based on the definition of the Greek word used for “His will” in this verse. That word is thelēma, which had the definition what one wishes to be done, or a desire.
1 John 5:14-15 meaning
So to pray anything according to God’s will, is to pray based on what God would wish or desire. So how does one know what God desires? Well, I’d suggest we generally know what God desires according to His Word. So to pray based on God’s desire, and thus pray anything according to God’s will, I would suggest is to pray something based on what His word states.
Asking the Lord for things to be given to us as we have seeked His kingdom of God first (Matthew 6:33). Things in accordance with that passage of course. Asking for peace as we have made our requests to Him with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6-7). These and other verses are all desires of God. Therefore it seems we can expect to receive these things in accordance with His Word as we live in obedience.
There’s more to God granting desires of people than just this verse though. I encourage you to study all the other verses as it relates to God granting desires, and also observe the actions of what people in scripture did which God responded with granted desires.
I hope you enjoyed this commentary on 1 John 5:14-15
Peace to all those who are in Christ.
