Monday Morning Pastor: Steven Furtick

Last updated on October 10th, 2019

I’m going to try to do something new here from time to time called Monday Morning Pastor. It’s a play on the phrase “Monday Morning Quarterback”, for those who don’t know. I’m going to analyze the Sunday sermons of the pastors of some of the biggest churches in the country and/or the world. I think it’s good to analyze these teachings since thousands and millions of people are being influenced by them, and it would seem important to make sure these teachings are accurate. It’s easy to think because someone or some church is popular their teachings are right. But as the examples of the Bereans in Acts 17 shows us, even the most prominent of teachers always have to be subject to the truth of the Word. This edition’s Monday Morning Pastor is Pastor Steven Furtick’s sermon at Elevation Church, “#HarvestProblems”. (more…)

Was Satan An Angel? The Myth of the Devil’s Origin

Last updated on November 4th, 2019

Was Satan an angel? Is the church teaching of the origin of the devil a myth? Let’s review scripture.

As you may have seen in my previous posts such as “What Happens When a Christian Dies? Hint: Not Heaven”, “Why Do We Celebrate Easter?” and many others, I’m not shy about challenging traditional beliefs if they seem inconsistent to what Scripture states. Because ultimately, I only care about believing what God wants me to believe according to His Word. Connecting with Him deeper through continually embodying the Word in my thoughts and actions. So with that said, let’s see through scripture whether it tells us Satan, aka the devil, was an angel. (more…)

The One Thing Jesus Hated The Most

To many this would seem to be an ironic title, “The One Thing Jesus Hated The Most”. Most Christians would probably tell you how much Jesus was about love or something to that effect. But there were things that Jesus spoke out against consistently that perhaps we don’t ponder enough. In understanding what Jesus strongly disliked, and being He was the son of God, consequently what God strongly dislikes, perhaps we find ourselves another avenue with connecting with God deeper. But first, if an alien were to crash land on earth with no knowledge of Christianity and had to guess what Jesus hated most based off of what Christian culture speaks out against most, what would there guesses be? Tell Your Churches to Stop Spending Money on Bigger Buildings

In western church culture, particularly in the US, the trend has been growing for over the last couple of decades for churches to use their collection money to expand and grow to a larger size. Though I ask of you to tell your churches to stop spending money on bigger buildings, it goes far beyond that. It’s also to tell them to stop spending on all the colorful bright lights, loud sound systems, fancy camera equipment and expensive musical instruments. If you didn’t read my first two sentences of this post, you’d think I was talking about a rock concert. But there’s an important lesson behind the title of this message, and it’s the issue of what God wants His collection money spent on. I’m going to show you what scripture seems to indicate to us. If You’re Going to Prophesy or Speak In Tongues, Then Do It His Way

It’s always important to follow how God wants things done through His Word. So if you’re going to prophesy or speak in tongues, then do it His way. Now personally, I’m skeptical of anyone who claims to have miraculous gifts of the Spirit for scriptural reasons that I’ll choose to withhold for now. However, being that some do believe people have these kinds of miraculous gifts of the Spirit; people should at least educate themselves on how things were conducted in scripture. Let’s review 1 Corinthians 14 and we’ll understand how these two most popular spiritual gifts were instructed to be used within the body of Christ. (more…)

So, you want to know how you find the right church? Well, this is how you find the right church. Many people have personal preferences as to the kind of church they like. Some people prefer ones that play  loud music, ones that have a charismatic preacher, and a number of other things. But do these things necessarily amount to what Scripture determines as necessary in finding the right church? Shouldn’t scripture be the most important standard as to what is the right local body of Christ we should be assembling with? Well, let’s dive into scripture and observe what information it has for. Women Can Wear Leggings and We Can All Avoid Staring at Their Butts

An interesting title isn’t it. But it’s true. Women can wear leggings, and we can all avoid staring at their butts. A couple stories I read on the web caught my eye that gave me a desire to address this topic in a post. One story was a woman who wrote an opinion on a Christian site that stated she would no longer wear leggings so not to tempt men to lust. A lot of women highly criticized the piece for its implication of women being at fault for man’s lust. Another story awhile ago that brought attention to the issue of leggings is a US representative from Montana proposed a bill that would ban yoga pants in public under indeceny laws. Let’s try to look at the issue from an objective standpoint, and see what we can find in Scripture. (more…)

When was the last time you gave a kiss to one of your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? Not a Christian that was a member of your family or a significant other, but a Christian in your fellow assembling of the Body of Christ. Believe it or not, it was quite a common thing that Apostle Paul and Apostle Peter encouraged Christians to be doing with each other. (more…)

What the Church Should Be All About

Last updated on October 10th, 2019

What do you think the Church should be all about? We all know it centers around Christ of course, but for the purposes of this question, I’m asking what the focus of any assembling of the Body of Christ should be in it’s actions. I can probably read the various answers in your mind right now. Some of you are probably thinking church should be all about worship. Others of you are probably thinking church should be about social outreach and community work. Then some might say the church should be about gifts of the Spirit, worshiping on the Sabbath, and so on with all the other denominational traditions people choose to emphasize. I however think we get the true answer to my opening question in Acts 2. (more…)
